Hydroinformatics and Knowledge Management

The overall theme of the Department of Hydroinformatics and Knowledge Management (HIKM) concerns the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) and modelling, and their application for resolving water-related problems in civil engineering, and information systems for integrated water management.

Hydroinformatics uses simulation modelling and information and communication technology to help in solving problems of hydraulics, hydrology and environmental engineering for better management of civil engineering systems.

The main areas of application are flood and river basin management, urban and coastal systems. For more information about the MSc programme in Hydroinformatics, please click here.

Knowledge management is a discipline that generally seeks an effective exchange of knowledge between staff and participants. This is achieved by integrating appropriate ICT systems for knowledge sharing and web-based collaborative working.

HIKM Department has two Cores:

  • Core of Hydroinformatics (head of Core is Professor D.P. Solomatine). This Core is repsonsible for the Hydroinformatics Specialisation of the Water Sience and Engineering MSc Programme.
  • Core of Knownedge Management (head of Core is Professor G. Alaerts)

The department is also involved in the development of online tools and facilities for distance education and e-learning.
