Library

UNESCO-IHE’s library provides access to over 22,000 titles and is equipped with on-line connections to a worldwide network of libraries. There is also a reading room offering many international newspapers and magazines.

The library is open to all UNESCO-IHE participants and staff, and to visitors by appointment. The services provided by the library include lending out books, requesting articles and other materials through the inter-library loan system and providing assistance in searching the electronic catalogue.

The collection

The library collection includes books, journals, lecture notes, MSc and PhD theses in hardcopy and some in digital format, related to all fields of interest at UNESCO-IHE. The collection is fully catalogued, and the open library catalogue can be searched using Square/BIBIS software.

The book collection comprises monographs, serial publications, conference proceedings, reference books (handbooks, dictionaries) and atlases. The books are arranged according to subject. A subject list is available in the Library.

The journals collection includes 200 titles, including discontinued subscriptions, which can be found in reading room arranged alphabetically by title. The current year’s issues of each journal, also arranged alphabetically by title, can be found on the shelves near the information desk.

The Library also contains a collection of UNESCO-IHE lecture notes, MSc and PhD theses, and publications in the IHE report series.
Databases such as Water Resources Abstracts and Science Direct are available through the internal network.
The library houses a small collection of videotapes.

The catalogue

The library collection is accessible through an electronic catalogue, BIBIS, which is searchable by author, title (word) and subject, as well as by so-called boolean operators.

Borrowing library materials

UNESCO-IHE participants may borrow items from the library, upon presentation of their library card. A maximum of ten items may be borrowed from the library at any one time. The maximum loan period is 21 days, renewable up to a maximum of 42 days. Renewals can be made by telephone (015- 215 1714), by email (library@unesco-ihe.org) or by completing the renewal request form in the BIBIS catalogue.

Please note that the loan period can be renewed only if the items have not already been reserved by another person. Reference works, MSc theses, bound and non-bound periodicals, and materials bearing a green sticker may not be borrowed.

Visitors to UNESCO-IHE may purchase a public patron card, valid for one year, for a fee of €20, on presentation of a valid ID, such as a driving licence, passport, etc. Students from other Dutch universities may apply for a library card free of charge.

By using their library card to borrow items from the library, borrowers agree to be responsible for those items, including the cost of replacing lost or damaged items.

Library services

The library regularly publishes lists of new publications and materials available through the library. Copies of the current list can be obtained from the library or can be consulted via the intranet (library page).

Photocopying facilities are available in the library. PhD theses and other UNESCO-IHE publications are available for sale in the library. Contact the librarian for more information.
