Building a glacier in the desert
On World Water Day, 22 March, Dutch artist and filmmaker Ap Verheggen, will present his latest art project ‘SunGlacier’ at the UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education in Delft, the Netherlands.
Verheggen intends to build a large sculpture in the desert that can produce icicles. To contradictory or counterintuitive belief, this sculpture is going to freeze when it is placed in the sun. The more sunlight it catches, the more ice it will produce. "SunGlacier will demonstrate that with current technology much can be achieved in response to emerging and urgent threats. I would like to jumpstart a creative way of thinking about adaptation to climate change and explore the boundaries of science and technology and realise the seemingly impossible," Verheggen said.
The SunGlacier project is a follow-up of last year’s art project 'cool(E)motion', whereby Verheggen placed two sculptures on melting icebergs in the arctic. On the occasion of World Water Day, UNESCO-IHE will also announce the nomination of Ap Verheggen as Cultural Ambassador to the international postgraduate water education facility.

Gletsjer in de woestijn
Op Wereldwaterdag, 22 maart, presenteert kunstenaar en filmmaker Ap Verheggen, zijn nieuwste kunstproject ‘SunGlacier’. De presentatie vindt plaats aan het UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education in Delft.
Verheggen wil een aantal grote sculpturen plaatsen in de woestijn die zelfstandig ijskegels kunnen produceren. Ijs smelt. Maar dit kunstobject zal bevriezen wanneer het in de zon wordt geplaatst. Hoe meer zonnestralen het opvangt, des te meer ijs het zal produceren.
"SunGlacier laat zien dat we met de hedendaagse techniek veel meer kunnen bereiken om ons aan te passen aan de constante veranderingen in de natuur. Met dit kunstproject wil ik aandacht vestigen op nieuwe, innovatieve manieren om op dergelijke veranderingen te kunnen reageren en anticiperen. Met SunGlacier zoek ik de grenzen van de wetenschap en de technologie op om het schijnbaar onmogelijke te realiseren," zegt Verheggen.
Het SunGlacier project is in navolging van cool(E)motion, een kunstproject dat vorig jaar maart veel aandacht trok toen de kunstenaar twee metalen kunstobjecten plaatste op een ijsberg in de buurt van Uummannaq in het westen van Groenland. Ap Verheggen zal op Wereldwaterdag ook formeel worden aangesteld als cultureel ambassadeur van UNESCO-IHE.
