Limnology and Wetland Ecosystems

Specialisation of International Master Programme in Environmental Science in cooperation with the Austrian Academy of Sciences

Participants in this specialisation will learn about the structure and functioning of aquatic and wetland ecosystems for their management and wise use, and learn how to interact with stakeholders, managers and policy makers in the development of best practices.

Significant changes in the programme

(effective from academic year 2009/2010)

1. The course locations are now not only in The Netherlands and Austria, but also in Kenya

2. The contents of the modules has changed (keeping the quality at the same high level)

3. The modules in Kenya can also be followed as a special extended long course package

More information can be obtained from Hans van Bruggen or Gerold Winkler

Start next run: October 2010 (open for registration)

Duration: 18 Months
Locations: Delft, The Netherlands; Egerton University, Kenya; Lunz and Vienna, Austria

New set up

The specialisation in Limnology and Wetland Ecosystems is jointly given by UNESCO-IHE and the Austrian Academy of Sciences, in cooperation with Egerton University in Kenya.

The specialisation in Limnology and Wetland Ecosystems (LWE) is the result of a new approach towards training of professionals in environmental research and education. An international network was created, and several European and East African partners have agreed to pursue streamlining of selected post-graduate course activities.

The LWE specialisation offers the chance to study in different countries and to share knowledge with scientists from all over the world. The specific and unique expertise of different countries and institutes are combined within one specialisation and the result is an excellent internationally oriented study programme. Studying within this unique network amplifies the benefits and values of working together.

Course Contents
The basic programme

Environmental Science is a broad field; any Masters Programme in this field is necessarily limited. The UNESCO-IHE Masters Programme in Environmental Science provides an overview of the field with emphasis on water related issues such as the functioning and use of aquatic and wetland ecosystems, water quality management, water scarcity, nutrient cycles, water pollution control, and natural systems for wastewater treatment. The basic programme consists of four three-week modules:

  • Introduction into Environmental Science,
  • Natural Processes in the Environment,
  • Human Dimensions in Environmental Change and
  • Analytical Tools in Environmental Science.

After the basic programme, you are going to specialise in the topics of the Limnology and Wetland Ecosystems specialisation.

The next 4 modules are given at The Egerton University in Kenya, under the supervision of UNESCO-IHE, and the last 4 modules will be given in Austria by different organisations (e.g. the Limnological Institute in Mondsee) under the auspices of the Austian Academy of Sciences and UNESCO-IHE.

More detailed information about the course content can be found below in in "contents of this Masters Programme".

Upon successful completion of this specialisation you will be able to:

  • design, organise and conduct scientific environmental research and contribute to the development of innovative technologies for solving environmental problems;
  • analyse dynamic interactions in complex human-environment systems;
  • formulate data requirements and data collection strategies and design and apply conceptual and computational models for a better understanding of these systems;
  • provide scientific advice for policy development and decision-making.

Aim of the programme, participant's profile and more information.

The study is completed with 6 months research in East Africa, Austria, The Netherllands or the country of origin of the candidate, and will finally result in an MSc thesis and a public presentation of the results, which are judged by an examination committee.

UNESCO-IHE degrees

a BSc degree or equivalent qualification

The programme consists of 14 three-week modules, of which four will be given in Delft, four in Kenya, and four in Austria. Six weeks (two modules) have been reserved for the MSc research proposal writing. When a participant has fulfilled all the requirements for these 14 modules admittance wi...
