Introduction to River Flood Modelling

Brief description

The short course 'Introduction to river flood modelling' introduces the participants to the state-of-the-art concepts and practices of flood modelling for management. The course covers modelling used for planning and design as well as for forecasting floods so that mitigating measures can be taken in time.

Learning objectives

On completion of this module the participants are able to:

  • Understand and explain the main principles of flood modelling;
  • Understand the Hydroinformatics tools available for flood modelling for management;
  • Understand and explain the governing processes of flood generation and propagation;
  • Identify the proper modelling methodology for a given problem;
  • Utilise their hands-on experience in the step-by-step modelling procedure to build flood inundation models;
  • Know how the river flood model can be used for structural and non-structural measures for flood mitigation.
Target group

The course is designed for current and future water professionals (engineers and scientists), decision-makers and others involved in flood modelling and flood management, particularly those who would like to be familiarised with the latest tools and techniques in flood modelling management. Pre-requisites are knowledge about hydrology and hydraulics. Some experience with flood modelling/management is desirable but not a must.

Additional information

The course will introduce the basic concepts of flood risk management and the latest tools and techniques available in managing flood risk. Specific contents are:

  • Application domains of Hydroinformatics: floods and urban systems environment;
  • Climate change and its impacts on hydrology;
  • Introduction to uncertainty analysis and their role in modelling;
  • Introduction to 1D2D modelling;
  • Nature and characteristics of floods;
  • Modelling flood propagation - flood routing;
  • Hydrological methods for flood routing;
  • Hydraulic methods for flood routing/ modelling in rivers;
  • Introduction to tools (such as Mike 11, HEC-RAS) used for flood routing;
  • Discussion on sustainable flood alleviation methods.
