Service Oriented Management of Irrigation Systems

Brief description

The interactive short course in Service Oriented Management of Irrigation Systems uses the experience and knowledge of the lecturers and the participants through interactive teaching, workshops, case studies, exercises and excursion to water management services in the Netherlands.

Learning objectives

Upon completion of the course, the participants will be able to:

  • formulate policy objectives for irrigation development and management;
  • identify water delivery arrangements including suitable flow control amenable to objectives;
  • comprehend different levels of water delivery service and associated costs;
  • conceptualize legislative, organisational and financial attributes of service oriented management of irrigation systems;
  • draw up service agreements considering cost recovery and accountability;
  • design asset management programs and action plans for implementation;
  • devise monitoring & evaluation and benchmarking systems for assessing system performance.
Target group

The Service Oriented Management of Irrigation Systems course is organised for professionals and academics involved in management of irrigation systems.

The course covers:

  • Basic principles, significance, and concepts of SOMIS.
  • Key activities and processes associated with service oriented management in varied agro-ecological and socio-economic settings.
  • Physical, economic, and institutional requisites for service oriented management inclusive of monitoring & evaluation (M&E) and benchmarking.

Examination

It is possible to take part in the examination of this short course. If you obtain a passing mark for this examination and return to UNESCO-IHE within four years after completion of the short course to follow a full MSc programme, you will receive exemption for this short course/module. The costs for this exam are €250 extra and should be borne by yourself. Taking part in the examination is not compulsory.
