Kala Vairavamoorthy

Professor of Sustainable Urban Infrastructure System

Resume

Kala Vairavamoorthy is Professor of Sustainable Urban Infrastructure Systems in the Department of Municipal Urban Infrastructure. He is a Civil Engineer with an MSc and PhD degrees in Environmental/Water Engineering from Imperial College, London.

He is a specialist in water-related infrastructure systems. A particular aspect of his background and expertise is the combination of a thorough understanding of water related urban infrastructure systems in low and middle income countries, coupled with strong skills in mathematical modelling, optimisation, and risk management.

Main research areas are in the development and application of risk based decision support systems and optimisation tools for the design, operation and management of water-related infrastructure systems.

These decision support systems and optimisation tools enable the planning of long term, sustainable strategies for improved infrastructure performance at the best available cost with the least environmental impact.

He was responsible for the development of the International Guidelines for the “Design and control of intermittent water supplies”. He was also responsible for the development of the GIS based tool IRA-WDS (integrated risk assessment of water distribution systems).

He joined us from Loughborough University where he worked for the Water Engineering Development Centre (WEDC).
