Short Courses

The aim of the course is to learn the need for an integrated approach of problems in the coastal zone and to experience that a multi disciplinary approach is vital for a sustainable development. In sum, the course is part of a learning process which, by means of a structured programme, undertakes the formation of trained manpower capable of redressing identified problems and helping to build capable institutions, better able to manage and guide the development of the coastal zone. The course seeks to enable participants to become more aware of their role in the whole process of Coastal Zone Management and of the potential of this concept to improve planning and implementation of an integrated coastal policy. Globalisation causes strong changes in world trade and rapid developments in logistic concepts. Ports all over the world are therefore challenged to increase capacity and access for ever growing ship sizes and to offer quicker, better and more innovative services. Furthermore national and international rules require a growing attention for health, safety, security and environment in port and transport activities. With these developments in mind, the Port Seminar discusses the planning and design of modern ports and construction and maintenance of port infrastructure. The course aims to train (future) decision makers, advisors and project engineers in governments, port and harbour authorities, off-shore companies and other organisations that have to execute dredging projects, in the preparation, bidding and supervising of dredging and reclamation works.
