Lecturer in Management and Organization of Sanitation (m/f)

The Department of Management and Institutions (MaI) provides postgraduate education and training in the area of water management to professionals with backgrounds in engineering, social science or management; carries out research in this area and supports the development of education and research capacity in universities and other knowledge centres in the developing world. The Department has two Core Groups: Water Resources Management and Water Services Management. The department wishes to appoint a Lecturer in Management and Organization of Sanitation.

Responsibilities
  • contribute to the development and implementation of scientific research;
  • contribute to the postgraduate educational activities in the Water Management Programme;
  • teach in the Water Management Programme and in other Masters programmes at UNESCO-IHE, and in relevant short courses offered within the Institute and abroad;
  • co-supervise PhD and MSc research;
  • contribute to the development of proposals and to the implementation of research and capacity building projects, including short and long assignments abroad.
Competences

Within the UNESCO-IHE system of competencies, the staff member will primarily have a research profile with a secondary priority for education and training. The new staff member can be from a variety of academic backgrounds, such as Environmental Engineering, the Social Sciences or Management Sciences, and has a proven interest in and experience with the management and organisation of piped and non-piped wastewater and sanitation systems by State and Non-State providers. The new staff member is prepared to work with different researchers on a variety of projects within the MaI Department and across the other academic departments, and has a comprehensive view on the functioning and sustainable management of piped and non-piped wastewater and sanitation systems. The candidate meets the following criteria:

  • a PhD degree in a field relevant for this post;
  • knowledge of, and preferably experience with social-science research methodologies;
  • experience in research projects related to piped and non-piped sanitation;
  • teaching experience at postgraduate level and good didactic qualities;
  • interest in computer and internet-based education;
  • affinity with, and preferably working experience in developing countries;
  • motivation to work in a multidisciplinary and multicultural environment;
  • good communication and teaching skills;
  • willingness to work abroad for short and long term assignments.
Terms of employment

This contract is initially for 2 years; after this period a permanent contract can be offered. The position is based in Delft, The Netherlands. A competitive salary is offered depending on qualifications and experience in accordance with the conditions of employment for Dutch Universities. The appointment implies entry into the Netherlands' Civil Service Pension Fund (ABP). Candidates must be prepared to carry out long- and short-term missions abroad.
