Environmental Planning and Implementation

Brief description

The aim of this course is to provide course participants with up-to-date knowledge regarding conceptual and methodological developments in environmental planning. The concept of sustainable development is used as a guiding principle.

This 3-week course is an interdisciplinary training programme that balances various aspects of environmental planning. While environmental problems are increasing in importance, the capacity to take the environment into account in governmental planning often lags behind.

Learning objectives

The objective of the course is to make the participants familiar with:

  • Basic environmental concepts such as sustainable development, carrying capacity, and ecological footprint.
  • Tools for environmental planning (policy analysis, policy instruments, use of environmental indicators, environmental information management, environmental valuation methods, environmental impact assessment)
  • The application of these concepts and tools in the development of national or regional environmental policy plans.
Target group

The course is aimed at professionals involved in water and environmental resources management. It is especially geared towards individuals confronted with issues and decision-making problems that require a broad view on development and resources utilisation. Those who are seeking exposure to innovative ideas, concepts and approaches in environmental planning will be exposed to knowledge and practice in line with the latest developments.

Additional information

The course includes the following subjects: concepts and principles of sustainable development, environmental policy analysis, environmental information management, environmental economics and environmental impact assessment.
