Water Transport and Distribution II

Brief description

To introduce participants to advanced methods and tools used in design, operation & maintenance of water transport and distribution systems.

Learning objectives

On the conclusion of this course, the participant should:

  • learn the theory of hydraulic and water quality modelling;
  • be able to develop a computer-aided network design, and apply the basic engineering economy principles in evaluation of various design alternatives;
  • be able to assess the reliability of supply, analyse transient flows and understand the source of water quality problems in distribution networks;
  • be able to use state-of-the-art network software and understand its application in data and asset management of transport and distribution systems.

Engineers and scientists with keen interest in modern methods, technologies and tools used in design, operation and maintenance of water transport & distribution networks.

Additional information

The course covers the following subjects:

  • Theory of Hydraulic Modelling: Methods of reliability assessment, optimisation models. Model building, validation and calibration.
  • Computer-aided Design: Development of alternatives, pump selection, design of tanks/water towers, cost comparisons. Monitoring and control of water quality in distribution networks, corrosion forms and remedies, bio-film formation and control, optimal water composition. Modelling of chlorine residuals, water age and mixing, GIS applications.
  • Asset Management: Optimal maintenance, rehabilitation and replacement scheduling.
  • Water Hammer in Pressure Conduits: Influence of pipeline characteristics on valve and pump operation, surge tanks and air vessels, simplified design procedures, constructional aspects, computer applications.
