Resume

Damir Brdjanovic holds a BSc degree in Civil Engineering from the Faculty of Civil Engineering, University of Sarajevo, an MSc degree in Pollution and Environmental Control from the School of Biological Sciences, Victoria University of Manchester, and a PhD degree obtained jointly at IHE and Delft University of Technology.

For academic achievement during his study, he was awarded several prizes at both national and international level, including awards of high academic and professional value, including the Soros Foundation Scholarship and the World Bank Scholarship.

As a graduate engineer Mr. Brdjanovic started his professional career in the water industry in 1988 with the consulting firm Unioninvest in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, where he was responsible for the design of drinking water treatment plants and water supply systems. In 1990 he joined the Institute for Water Resources Development in Sarajevo and managed process design on a variety of wastewater treatment projects.

His international career started in 1993 with North West Water Engineering in Risley, England, as a wastewater process engineer working on large wastewater treatment projects in the United Kingdom and the Czech Republic.

From 1994 until beginning of 1998 Damir worked as Ph.D. researcher at the International Institute for Infrastructural, Hydraulic and Environmental Engineering (IHE) and the Faculty of Chemical Technology and Materials Science of Delft University of Technology (TUD).

During this period he gained a summer internship with the World Bank, Washington D.C. where he managed the prognostic study of water supply and sanitation in East India.

After completing his PhD research on the modelling of biological phosphorus removal from wastewater in activated sludge systems, he spent four years working with large Dutch consultants IWACO and Royal Haskoning managing various projects in both water and wastewater treatment field. His most recent post was Senior Advisor in Wastewater Treatment Technology.

During his career Mr. Brdjanovic has taken part in water and wastewater projects ranging from small to those in excess to Euro 45 million. He is familiar with both IFIs (e.g. the World Bank, MIGA and EBRD) and donors (e.g. European Commission and Senter International).

His professional career has been spent in many countries, including Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Yugoslavia, Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Czech Republic, Estonia, Lithuania, England, Ghana, Egypt, Iran, Japan and United States.

In September 2002, Mr. Brdjanovic joined UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education and is currently Associate Professor in Urban Sanitation. His present scope of work covers post-graduate education, applied research, and consultancy in the field of domestic and industrial wastewater treatment and pollution control.
