Edward O. Akinyemi is a civil engineer who has specialized in transportation and traffic engineering. Before joining UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education as a senior staff member in November 1991, he was a university academici with 19 years of teaching and research experience in Nigeria, Canada, USA and the Netherlands.
He obtained his Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from Ahmadu Bello University in Nigeria in 1972, his Master of Engineering from Carleton University in Canada in 1977, and his PhD degree from SUNY at Buffalo in USA in 1980.
In addition, he was appointed a Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Ilorin, Nigeria in September 1991. As an academician, Mr. Akinyemi has published over 30 scientific papers on transport, traffic and road engineering in local and international journals and refereed conference proceedings.
In addition, he has presented papers at some 20 scientific conferences in Africa, North America and Western Europe. He has designed and taught both undergraduate and post-graduate subjects in transport, traffic, road and geotechnical engineering.
Mr. Akinyemi is a certified civil engineer who has been involved in many design and construction assignments, and consultancy for local organisations (such as Ministries of works, Private Companies and Universities in Nigeria) as well as International Organisations ( such as UNDP and ILO).
Since joining UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education, Eddy has been involved with education, training and research activities in transportation and traffic engineering as well as in the assessment and management of environmental impacts of roads and transport systems.
He has also been involved with consultancy projects on labour-based road engineering for ILO in Cambodia and the Swedish Road Administration. He is currently writing two books titled "Integrated Traffic Engineering" and "Environmental Considerations in Transportation and Road Engineering" specifically for training of engineers in developing countries.
