Resume

Jan-Herman Koster is an associate professor in urban transport. Since graduating from Delft University of Technology in 1978 (MSc in Civil Engineering, specialisation in Physical Planning), he has held a number of positions in the private sector and government, both in The Netherlands and overseas.

He first worked for a Netherlands based town and country planning consultancy for five years. In 1983, he joined the Ministry of Works, Power and Water of the State of Bahrain, were he was a Technical Advisor in the Office of the Minister.

He subsequently spent two years in Saudi Arabia as resident engineer on a large construction project (King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology, Riyadh).

Mr. Koster joined UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education in 1987. Since that time he traveled extensively to many parts of the world and accumulated extensive knowledge in the areas of capacity building, development cooperation and management. His main interest is in urban public transport, with a research interest in informal public transport systems.

His major project responsibilities include/have included the Urban Mobility Pilot Studies in Kenya under the World Bank/UNECA coordinated Sub-Sahara Africa Transport Programme (SSATP) and the Sustainable Urban Mobility component of UNHabitat/UNEP's Sustainable Cities Programme.
