Dr. McClain's interests lie in science and training to support integrated water resources management (IWRM). His research focuses on river biogeochemistry and hydrology, land/water interactions, and natural attenuation processes in rivers. He and his students apply field, laboratory, remote sensing, and modeling techniques to investigate the dynamics of freshwater systems in a development context. The majority of his research over the past 18 years has been focused in the Amazon Basin, but he has more recently begun research in East Africa, the Caribbean, and Western India. He is Director of the USAID Global Water for Sustainability (GLOWS) Program and works with partners in developing countries around the world to plan and implement IWRM programs that balance the needs of people and ecosystems. He also serves on the Scientific Steering Committee of the UNESCO Ecohydrology Programme and Advisory Committee of the UNESCO ISARM Americas Programme.
