Stefan Uhlenbrook

Professor Stefan Uhlenbrook is Professor of Hydrology and heads the Core Hydrology and Water Resources in the Department of Water Engineering at UNESCO-IHE, Delft, the Netherlands. He also holds a zero-appointment at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and a visiting professorship at the Technical University in Delft.

He has taken up the Chair in January 2005 after 10 years (including PhD research and 'habilitation') of research and teaching at the University of Freiburg, Germany. Prof Uhlenbrook’s main research interests are in catchment hydrology. This includes hydrological processes research at various scales: hillslope and headwater scale as well as catchment and river basin scale. He is experienced in particular in the use of tracer techniques (natural and artificial tracers) to explore flow pathways, runoff source areas and residence times of the water in different surface and subsurface systems.

In addition to experimental process research using tracer and other geophysical techniques, he stands for the integration of field based research results into hydrological models. The central goal of his research is the combination of experimental data with new and innovative simulations models to improve the predictions of hydrological variables at gauged and ungauged sites. This implies the reduction of the prediction uncertainty by incorporating an improved understanding of the functioning of hydrological processes.

Professor Uhlenbrook has published over 100 papers in journals and conference proceedings and edited several special issues of journals and books. He is member of several scientific steering committees (see CV for further details).
