Modular Set Up

The table below shows all course modules of the specialisation within the framework of the International Master Programme in Water Science and Engineering.

The programme has a size of 106 ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) credits, which are collected over a period of 18 months.

Hydraulics & Hydrology 5 Free-surface hydrodynamics, engineering hydrology, introduction to GIS and remote sensing.
Introduction to Land and Water Development 5 Land and water resources, aspects of agricultural water management, irrigation and drainage design.
Water Management Systems and Agronomy I 5 Irrigation methods, basic hydraulics of irrigation and drainage systems, soil moisture characteristics, tertiary unit layout alternative under different irrigation methods.
Water Management Systems and Agronomy II 5 Applied hydraulics of irrigation and drainage systems, field water distribution, deficit irrigation, hydraulic laboratory measurements and agronomy.
Aspects of Irrigation and Drainage 5 Economic and financial analyses; sociological aspects, flow control systems, main drainage systems and salinity control at field level.
Service Oriented Management of Irrigation Systems 5 Management of irrigation systems, asset management, irrigation policy and organization.
Conveyance Systems 5 Unsteady flow phenomena; sediment transport in open irrigation channels; groundwater flow, water management system modelling with application of GIS and other modelling tools e.g. Duflow.
Fieldwork / Fieldtrip 5 Field experiments in irrigation, exposure to European water sector organisations in the field of land and water development and hydraulic engineering.
Irrigation and Drainage Structures 5 Irrigation structures, environmental impact assessment and environmental aspects of irrigation and drainage, pumps and lifting devices.
Advanced Methods and Equipment 5 Sprinkler and drip irrigation methods, sub-surface drainage, remote sensing for irrigation and drainage systems, re-use of low water quality, land use in water and flood prone areas.
Group-work 5 Development of practical experiences in conducting a multi-disciplinary case study in a team work.
Selected Topics 4 Research methodology, one-week short courses on diverse topics chosen by participant.
MSc Research Proposal 6 Preparation of the MSc research proposal including problem identification, literature review, approach and methodology, expected results and work plan.
