UNESCO Water Education Workshop

On 26 and 27 February 2009, UNESCO-IHE will host the UNESCO Water Education workshop with a focus on the North American and European region.

The workshop is part of a cycle of similar workshops that are taking place worldwide in different regions of the world.

Lake Victoria Region Water and Sanitation Initiative

Starting in February 2009, UNESCO-IHE will participate in the Lake Victoria Region Water and Sanitation Initiative (LVRWSI).

SNV, the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, the Gender and Water Alliance and UNESCO-IHE have entered into a partnership arrangement with UN-Habitat for the implementation of the capacity building component of this programme that is funded by multiple bilateral and multilateral donors.

Global forces unite in Water Footprint Network

On 16 October 2008, the Water Footprint Network was founded. The water footprint of a nation is the volume of water needed for the production of the goods and services consumed by its inhabitants. The idea of the water footprint is quite similar to the ecological footprint, but focusing on the use of water.

Water professionals arrive for start of Academic Programme

In the second week of November 2008, 180 mid career professionals from 61 countries arrived in Delft to pursue a Masters Programme at UNESCO-IHE. They will take part in one of four Masters Programmes that address key aspects of water for people, water for food, water for nature and water security.

On the occasion of the Inaugural Addresses of Nigel Wright, Professor of Hydraulic Engineering and River Basin Development, and Jay O’Keeffe, Professor of Freshwater Ecosystems, the Institute organised a symposium entitled “Integrating knowledge for sustaining rivers” on Friday 10 October. At the symposium top experts in the fields of environmental sustainability, ecosystems and river engineering gathered to discuss advancements, lessons learned and challenges in the field.

Strengthening flood management education

Professor Erik Pasche, from the University of Hamburg, focused its first lecture at UNESCO-IHE on software development for flood risk management. Professor Pasche will be lecturing as visiting Professor for the institute in the coming years. This collaboration with the University of Hamburg will be extended to the area of research in flood resilience and urban flood management.

Ms. Hildie Nacorda successfully defends PhD thesis

On Friday the 26th of September, Hildie Nacorda successfully defended her Doctorate thesis entitled: Burrowing Shrimps and Seagrass Dynamics in Shallow –Water Meadows off Bolinao (NW Philippines). Professor van Vierssen was her promoter, and Dr. Vermaat her co-promotor. The promotion was co-hosted by UNESCO-IHE and Wageningen University.

Summer course on Sustainable Sanitation

New project: improving sanitation in African megacities

UNESCO-IHE has launched a project to develop and implement strategies to improve sanitation in unsewered slums in African mega-cities. Through an integrated approach, the project will analyse the possibilities to improve sanitation in an environmentally sustainable way, and which options seem more promising for a variety of reasons for Africa.

Renewed agreements with UNESCO and the Dutch Government

UNESCO-IHE has renewed the operational and cooperation agreements with UNESCO and the Dutch Government. They guarantee a continuation of the integration in the UN-system and provide a solid financial basis for the Institute for the coming 5 years.

Successful PhD Promotion on solid waste bioreactor

On July 3rd, 2008 Mr. Roberto Valencia Vázquez successfully defended his PhD thesis and propositions on Enhanced stabilisation of municipal solid waste in bioreactor landfills. Professor Huub Gijzen was his promotor, and Henk Lubberding, PhD, his co-promotor.

Indonesian minister visits UNESCO-IHE

The Minister of Public Works of Indonesia, Mr. Ir. Djoko Kirmanto visited UNESCO-IHE on June the 24. Mr. Kirmanto, himself an alumnus of the Institute, was welcome by the deputy director Ir. Joop de Schutter.
