&lt;a href="http://www.snvworld.org" target="_blank"&gt;SNV&lt;/a&gt;, the &lt;a href="http://www.fcm.ca/" target="_blank"&gt;Federation of Canadian Municipalities&lt;/a&gt;, &lt;a href="http://www.genderandwater.org/" target="_blank"&gt;the Gender and Water Alliance&lt;/a&gt; and UNESCO-IHE have entered into a partnership arrangement with &lt;a href="http://www.unhabitat.org/" target="_blank"&gt;UN-Habitat&lt;/a&gt; for the implementation of the capacity building component of this programme that is funded by multiple bilateral and multilateral donors.

On 16 October 2008, the Water Footprint Network was founded. The water footprint of a nation is the volume of water needed for the production of the goods and services consumed by its inhabitants. The idea of the water footprint is quite similar to the ecological footprint, but focusing on the use of water.

At the symposium top experts in the fields of environmental sustainability, ecosystems and river engineering gathered to discuss advancements, lessons learned and challenges in the field.

Professor Erik Pasche, from the University of Hamburg, focused its first lecture at UNESCO-IHE on software development for flood risk management. Professor Pasche will be lecturing as visiting Professor for the institute in the coming years. This collaboration with the University of Hamburg will be extended to the area of research in flood resilience and urban flood management.

On Friday the 26th of September, Hildie Nacorda successfully defended her Doctorate thesis entitled: &lt;i&gt;Burrowing Shrimps and Seagrass Dynamics in Shallow –Water Meadows off Bolinao (NW Philippines). &lt;/i&gt;Professor van Vierssen was her promoter, and Dr. Vermaat her co-promotor. The promotion was co-hosted by UNESCO-IHE and Wageningen University.
