Ms. Dr. Hendrike Helbron joined UNESCO-IHE on 15th October 2009. She is lecturer in Environmental Planning and Management at the Department of Environmental Resources. She holds a doctoral degree in environmental engineering, which was granted by the Department of Environmental Planning of Brandenburg University of Technology (BTU) in Cottbus, Germany. Her research focused on the development of an assessment method and indicator system for strategic environmental assessment in regional land use planning. She selected key indicators and proposed assessment thresholds for the adaptation of land use to climate change.

After her study of Landscape and Spatial Planning at the Leibniz University of Hanover in Germany and at the University of the West of England (UWE) in Bristol, UK, she specialised in environmental and spatial planning, strategic environmental assessment (SEA), environmental impact assessment (EIA), and the integration of sustainability strategies and environmental policies into decision-making. She worked for over five years as a scientific research assistant and lecturer at BTU Cottbus.
