Jan-Peter Buiteman (MSc in Chemical Engineering, TU Delft) is Senior Lecturer in Environmental Engineering at UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education and is co-responsible for training and research in Water Supply within the Section Sanitary and Environmental Engineering.

His teaching subjects are in the field of urban & rural water supply as: water chemistry and water quality, raw water collection, water treatment and water distribution. Regarding managing of utilities he teaches and advises in theoretical aspects, design, operation & maintenance, renovation and extension.

In his lectures on "Management in Water Supply" attention is given to aspects like organisation structures, administration and generating management information, decision making, financial management, cost control, project management, community participation, etc.

A master plan for rehabilitation and up-grading of existing water supply systems and plans for implementation is yearly prepared by the course participants under the guidance of Mr. Buiteman.

Apart from teaching etc. Mr. Buiteman is also involved in course management, as (deputy) course leader Sanitary Engineering, and organising short specialised courses.

His applied research, performed with inputs of MSc candidates, is in the field of water treatment.

Due to his knowledge and long experience, Mr. Buiteman is frequently asked for teaching and consultancy abroad in rehabilitation and capacity building projects.

For two years he was an expatriate Project Manager in a capacity building project at the Technical University of Ghana. Prior to joining UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education, Mr. Buiteman was employed at the Rotterdam Water Works, the largest water works in the Netherlands.
