Mathew Kurian has fifteen years of experience with policy research in the field of water and sanitation in transition and developing countries. Mathew holds a Ph.D. in Development Studies from the Institute of Social Studies, The Hague, Netherlands. Mathew served as a Senior Water and Sanitation Specialist at the Water and Sanitation Program (WSP) of the World Bank in which capacity he led projects on source sustainability of rural water supply schemes and peri-urban wastewater. Prior to joining the World Bank Mathew was employed by International Water Management Institute (CGIAR) as Associate Expert- Institutions and Policy Studies. Mathew is presently Senior Lecturer- Management and Organization of Sanitation at UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education, Delft, Netherlands where pursues research and teaching interests relating to themes of institutions and development, governance of common pool resources and political economy of water and sanitation services. One of his primary responsibilities has also been to draft the urban sanitation policy note for the Dutch ministry of foreign affairs. Mathew has also been involved in successfully establishing a distance learning course on water supply and sanitation for policy makers, city planners and utility managers. He is presently editing a collection of papers on the subject titled Peri-urban Water & Sanitation Services: Institutions, Behavior and Multi-Level Governance to be published by Springer in 2010.
