Shreedhar Maskey

Senior Lecturer in Hydrology

Resume

Shreedhar Maskey is currently post-doctoral researcher under the Core of Hydrology and Water Resources at UNESCO-IHE in Delft, the Netherlands. He holds a BE degree in civil engineering from Tribhuvan University (Nepal, 1991), MSc degree in Hydroinformatics (with distinction) from IHE, Delft (Netherlands, 1999) and PhD degree with the thesis title "Modelling Uncertainty in Flood Forecasting Systems" from Delft University of Technology/UNESCO-IHE, Delft (Netherlands, 2004).

He has 14+ years experience as professional civil engineer, lecturer and researcher in hydrology and hydroinformatics. His research experience/interest includes GIS- and remote sensing-based large-scale distributed hydrological modeling, flood forecasting, uncertainty and risk analysis and optimization.

Currently, he is heavily involved in the Sino-Dutch Cooperative Project "Establishment of a Satellite Based Water Monitoring and Flow Forecasting System in the Yellow River Basin" (ORET 02/09), together with the Yellow River Conservancy Commission (Zhengzhou, China), EARS (Delft, Netherlands) and Hofung (Beijing, China).

His main responsibility in this project is to develop the runoff modelling component consisting of 2D distributed land component and 1D river routing component, and to conduct trainings of project partner staff.

As part of his research for Master of Science he spent 6 months (1998-1999) at HR Wallingford, UK as research academic, and subsequently at UNESCO-IHE from 1999 to 2004 as research fellow in hydroinformatics where he involved in the following projects: Computer Aided Water Management (Dutch Water Authority funded project, Apr- Dec 1999), Operational Solutions for the Management of Inundation Risks in the Information Society (OSIRIS) (EU project, Jan 2000- Mar 2003) and a PoWER project (Jan- Jul 2004) for the development of I-Learning course on Flood Modelling and Management.

During 1991 to 1997, before coming to the Netherlands, he spent most of his time as lecturer in civil engineering (mainly engineering mechanics and structures) and as structural designer of civil structures, which include buildings, irrigation structures and bus terminals and parks.

He was appointed Assistant Campus Chief of Pulchowk Engineering College of Tribhuvan University (1996-1997), the largest engineering college in Nepal; chaired the committee for the Diploma Level Entrance Examination (1997) for 4 engineering campuses of the university; chaired a committee for the preparation of Annual Report (1997) of the Institute of Engineering of the university; and was appointed a member of a team to carryout a study on socio-economic background of students seeking admission to the Institute of Engineering (1996). During the same period, he was also involved in two research projects on hill irrigation funded by Ford Foundation.

Dr. Maskey received "Groundwater Science and Engineering Award" by the International Association of Hydraulic Research (IAHR) Symposium 2000 on Groundwater held in May 2000 in Saitama, Japan, and became winner in the seminar-cum-project on "Water and Human (In)Security" held between January-March 2002 in The Hague, The Netherlands.

He has good international publication records, and reviews technical papers for international journals. He holds memberships of a number of professional societies and has extensive travel records.
