Natural wastewater treatment systems like soil aquifer treatment (SAT) and constructed wetlands (CW) are robust barriers, can remove multiple contaminants, minimize the use of chemicals, use relatively less energy and have a small carbon footprint. The main objective of this research project is to address the identified knowledge gaps and investigate the removal capabilities of two main natural wastewater treatment systems (SAT and CW) and their possible hybrids or integrates with respect to removal of bulk organics, nutrients and micropollutants under different climatic conditions. Our partners in this UPaRF funded project are Birziet University (Palestine), Univalle Cali (Colombia) and KAUST (Saudi Arabia).
